Bishop Robert Banks of Green Bay, Wis. Used his weekly column in the April 30 edition of The compass, official newspaper of the Diocese of Green Bay, to suggest some solutions to teenage violence in the aftermath of the Littleton, Colo., tragedy. Among his answers? The Knights of Columbus.
Bishop Banks blames the usual suspects inadequate gun control, the culture of death and "skuzzy television shows" for the tragedy fo teen violence. But what, he asks his readers, "do we do for our country now?" Bishop Banks says he would encourage all those searching for some answers to that question to join the Catholic Church and , if so called, to become a priest. "But the Lord deliberately calls only a small percentage of men to priesthood. So what would I say to this young man who wants to do something to change the country for the better? Id tell him to join the Knights of Columbus.
"There is a stand-up organization that is, first of all, for the pope. And the pope is the only world leader that has put his finger on the modern problem of freedom that has no connection to truth and goodness. And the Knights are pro-life, and pro-family, and pro-Catholic education, and pro-respect for every person, especially those challenged by disabilities. And the Knights do something about the problems this country faces .
"Apart from that, the Knights are the Church with an attitude, the right kind of attitude an attitude of love for the Church and for his country. It is an attitude that is based on the confidence that we have in Jesus, the true shepherd who will lead us through the dark valley."
